| Golf Shirt Knits and Fabrics: Birdseyes and HerringbonesBesides the “regular” jacquard knit there is, for instance, the birdseye jacquard, so named because of the fairly small geometric pattern with a center dot that’s knit directly into the fabric. [The basic birdseye pattern is essentially a small diamond pattern knit into the fabric, each with a dot in the center.] There is also the nail head jacquard design, wherein the jacquard forms a design something like nail heads, oddly enough!
One golf shirt that incorporate a birdseye pattern is the APL-8504 from the Arnold Palmer collection. This polo is a mercerized birdseye oxford pique featuring Features 100% combed cotton, 4.6 oz., 3-button placket w/Arnold Palmer signature buttons, and Arnold Palmer logo satin-taped neckband. The Mercerized yarns ensure soft supple texture and vivid color. Another is the APL-8503, with a honeycomb birdseye collar. The shirt is 6.5 oz. 100% cotton and designed with coordinating tipped birdseye collar and cuffs. As with others in the Arnold Palmer line, this garment has a generous fit.
The herringbone design is a chevron or zig-zag pattern [a distinctive V pattern] that’s knit right into the fabric as part of the weaving process [a broken twill weave, actually]. This distinctive design comes, quite naturally, from the skeletal structure of a herring! We might add that the houndstooth pattern is also one knit directly into the fabric, and shows a pattern of a medium-sized broken check [and, as you’ve no doubt guessed, the jagged back teeth of a hound!]
