This was the opener in a recent message to approximately 15,000 clients and prospects of Corporate Apparel Unlimited [CAU]. "Based on our research we knew that we were an event-focused business. After looking around the Web we discovered that nobody in our industry was providing quick online help tailored to business's specific needs for event-planning assistance," say CAU's Brandi Beukema, the real Wizard. A few of Corporate Apparel's competitors have mini-tutorials about "how to" plan for events, but the Wizard concept seems to be unique. CAU has been running a Web-wide contest since March 10th of this year to see what captures people's attention. After hundreds of visits to the Event site over the past 3 weeks, the experiment is already paying dividends for the company, by increasing sales leads and its opt-in email lists. Asked how the Event Wizard works, Beukema explains, "Actually it's very simple. The site visitor completes a quick 5-question form online, provides us the contact information, and then simply clicks "Submit" to send our Wizard the request for event ideas." "It takes only 2 minutes - at most - to fill in the blanks and click on the drop-down items. We ask about the event budget, its theme, and whether the responder has a particular interest in casual apparel or accessories," says Beukema. The Wizard prepares 3 recommendations for the person's company, which could in some instances even include a garment from a competitor. Recommendations are provided within a 72-hour turnaround. The Corporate Apparel Staff plans to monitor results closely and will be prepared to fine-tune the Event Wizard whenever clients provide clues about what they would still like to see on CAU's Web site.
